Extraction in West Palm Beach

Extraction in West Palm Beach

A tooth that has cracked below the gumline, a molar that decay has hollowed out, or a crowded tooth blocking an orthodontic plan can all reach a point where keeping it causes more trouble than removing it. When that happens, a careful extraction can relieve pain, stop a problem from spreading, and clear the way for whatever comes next. At Family Dental Care, we perform both simple and surgical extractions for West Palm Beach patients right in our own office, so you can move from diagnosis to relief without being sent somewhere unfamiliar.

Every extraction starts with a conversation and a thorough dental exam. We look at the tooth, ask about your symptoms, and take images so we can see the roots and surrounding bone. Many times we can save a tooth with a filling, crown, or root canal, and we will tell you if that is a realistic option. Extraction is our recommendation when the tooth cannot be restored or keeping it would put your other teeth or gums at risk.

Common reasons we recommend removing a tooth include severe decay, a fracture that extends too deep to repair, advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth, crowding, and wisdom teeth that are trapped or coming in at an awkward angle. If you are in pain right now, we offer emergency dental appointments, so West Palm Beach patients dealing with a sudden toothache or broken tooth can be seen promptly.

We offer two types of extraction, and your exam determines which one fits your situation. A simple extraction is for a tooth that is fully visible above the gums and can be lifted out in one piece. After numbing the area, we gently loosen the tooth and remove it. This is often the approach for a decayed or broken tooth that still has a solid structure above the gumline.

A surgical extraction is for teeth that are harder to reach. This includes teeth that have broken off at the gumline, teeth with curved or unusually long roots, and impacted wisdom teeth that haven't fully emerged. We may make a small opening in the gum or divide the tooth into sections so it comes out more easily. Surgical extraction involves a few more steps, but the goal is the same: removing the tooth as comfortably as possible while protecting the surrounding bone and tissue.

What to Expect on Treatment Day

On the day of your extraction, we numb the area thoroughly and check that you are comfortable before we begin. If you feel anxious about dental work, ask us about oral sedation, which can help you feel more relaxed during your visit. We explain each step as we go, so you always know what is happening.

Here is how a typical appointment unfolds:

  • We review your health history and confirm the treatment plan with you.
  • We apply local anesthetic and give it time to take full effect.
  • We remove the tooth using either the simple or surgical approach.
  • We place gauze to control bleeding and, when needed, close the site.
  • We go over your home care instructions before you leave.

If you are planning to replace the tooth, we may talk about bone grafting at the extraction site. Grafting can help preserve the bone so you will have a stronger foundation for a future dental implant.

Healing and Aftercare at Home

The first day or two after an extraction matter most. Bite gently on the gauze as directed, rest, and stick to soft foods. Avoid using straws, smoking, and rinsing hard during the early healing period, since these can disturb the blood clot that forms in the socket. A cold compress on the outside of your cheek can help with swelling, and we will give you guidance on managing any discomfort.

Some tenderness is normal. If you notice pain that gets worse instead of better, bleeding that won't stop, or anything that worries you, call our office. We would much rather hear from you early. Once you've healed, we can talk about whether replacing the tooth makes sense for you.

Replacing a Tooth and Planning Your Costs

An empty space can let neighboring teeth drift and make chewing harder. Because we provide restorative care under one roof, we can plan your replacement right alongside your extraction. Options include dental implants, bridges, implant-supported bridges, and complete or partial dentures, depending on how many teeth are missing and your goals.

When it comes to paying for care, we accept all major PPO insurance plans and welcome self-pay patients. Before your treatment, we go over the plan with you so you know what to expect. If you live in West Palm Beach and have a tooth that's bothering you, call Family Dental Care to schedule an exam with Dr. Westcott or Dr. Trivedi. We will help you find the most comfortable path forward.
