A chipped front tooth, coffee stains that brushing will not lift, a gap that has bothered you since middle school, or a gummy smile you hide in photos can all affect how comfortable you feel speaking, laughing, and meeting new people. Cosmetic dentistry focuses on the appearance of your teeth and gums: their color, shape, size, alignment, and the way they frame your face. At Family Dental Care in West Palm Beach, our dentists, Dr. Michael Westcott and Dr. Sujay Trivedi, practice both general and cosmetic dentistry. That means we look at how your smile functions as well as how it looks before recommending any change.

Cosmetic dentistry is a group of treatments rather than a single procedure. Some are simple and conservative, such as brightening discolored enamel. Others are more involved, such as reshaping several teeth or coordinating a full smile makeover. Because we serve patients ages eight and up, we see a wide range of concerns. Teens and young adults may want straighter teeth. Busy professionals may notice staining from years of coffee or tea. Older adults may have worn edges, old dental work that no longer matches, or missing teeth they want to replace.

Common concerns and the treatments we often discuss for them include:

  • Stained or dull teeth: in-office whitening or take-home whitening
  • Small chips, gaps, or uneven edges: composite bonding, composite veneers, or tooth recontouring
  • More significant discoloration or misshapen teeth: porcelain veneers or crowns
  • Crowding or spacing: clear aligners, including Invisalign
  • A gummy or uneven gumline: gum contouring, gingivectomy, or crown lengthening
  • Missing teeth: dental implants, implant-supported bridges, or dentures

The best candidates for cosmetic treatment start with a healthy foundation. If you have active decay or gum disease, we will usually address it first with fillings, gum disease treatment, or scaling and root planing. Cosmetic work placed over unhealthy teeth or gums is less likely to look its best or last. Your first visit typically includes a thorough dental exam so we understand what is happening beneath the surface.

It also helps to know that some treatments are reversible and some are not. Whitening and bonding preserve most of your natural tooth structure. Porcelain veneers usually require removing a thin layer of enamel, which makes them a long-term commitment. We explain these differences plainly so you can weigh them. For patients planning several changes at once, we offer Digital Smile Design and cosmetic smile-design consultations. These help you visualize possible results and talk through options before treatment begins. If you feel anxious about dental visits, oral sedation is available for appropriate patients.

When Your Smile Needs More Than a Touch-Up

Some patients come to us wanting one small improvement. Others have a combination of worn, broken, or missing teeth that affects both appearance and chewing. In those situations, cosmetic goals often overlap with restorative care. A smile makeover might blend whitening, veneers, and a crown. A full mouth reconstruction might involve implants, bone grafting, and implant-supported dentures or bridges.

Our office handles complex treatment planning across several disciplines, including prosthodontic, periodontic, and orthodontic care. That lets us sequence treatment thoughtfully. For example, we may straighten teeth with aligners before placing veneers, or shape the gumline before seating crowns. Your care stays coordinated in one familiar place instead of being split among separate offices.

Caring for Your Results

How long cosmetic results last depends largely on daily habits and regular maintenance. Brushing, flossing, and routine cleanings and exams protect both your natural teeth and any restorations. Whitening results can fade gradually with staining foods and drinks, and touch-ups with a take-home kit can help. Bonding and veneers should be treated like natural teeth. Avoid using them to open packages or bite very hard objects.

If you clench or grind at night, we may recommend a night mouth guard to protect your new smile from excess wear. Patients who complete clear aligner treatment will need retainers to help keep their teeth in position. We also provide retainers for patients who were treated elsewhere.

Insurance and Payment Options

Coverage for cosmetic dentistry varies. Many insurance plans do not cover treatments considered purely elective, such as whitening. Procedures that also restore function, such as crowns or tooth replacement, may qualify for partial coverage. We accept all major PPO insurance plans and welcome self-pay patients. Our team can help you understand what your plan may contribute before you decide on treatment.
