Implant-Supported Choices
For added stability, we also offer implant-supported and snap-in dentures.
Losing several teeth, or all of them, changes far more than your smile. It affects how you chew, how clearly you speak, and how comfortable you feel at the dinner table. Dentures replace missing teeth with a removable prosthesis custom-made for your mouth. At Family Dental Care in West Palm Beach, our team offers both complete dentures and partial dentures, and we help each patient decide which approach fits their situation.
A complete denture replaces every tooth in an upper or lower arch, or both. It rests on the gums and the ridge of bone beneath them. Complete dentures suit patients who have already lost all their teeth in an arch, and patients whose remaining teeth can't be saved and need to be removed. Our office performs both simple and surgical extractions, so we can handle that step here before your denture is made.
A partial denture fills gaps when some healthy natural teeth remain. It replaces only the missing teeth and uses your existing teeth for support and stability. A partial can be a good choice for someone missing several teeth in different spots, or someone who isn't a candidate for a fixed bridge. Keeping your natural teeth whenever possible is one reason we look closely at partials before recommending a full replacement.
Patients come to us for dentures for many different reasons. Some are concerned about their health, some about how a current appliance feels, and some about the long-term picture. Common situations include:
- Several teeth lost to decay or gum disease, making chewing difficult
- Remaining teeth that are failing and would need extensive treatment to keep
- An existing denture that feels loose, cracked, or worn
- A desire to replace missing teeth affordably after an extraction
- Interest in a more secure option than a traditional denture
Each of these calls for a different conversation. For example, if you already wear a denture that no longer fits well, we can repair or replace it, even if it was made elsewhere. If gum disease contributed to your tooth loss, we can treat it first so a partial denture has healthy support. Our prosthodontic services also include complex treatment planning, which helps when a case involves extractions, gum care, and replacement teeth together.
Comparing Traditional and Implant-Supported Options
Conventional dentures are held in place by suction, the shape of your gums, and, for partials, your natural teeth. Many patients do well with them. Others find a conventional lower denture especially hard to keep steady. For those patients, we offer implant-supported dentures, including snap-in dentures, which attach to dental implants placed in the jaw. We also provide fixed implant-supported bridges and All-on-X dental implants for patients who prefer teeth that stay in place full-time.
Implants require enough bone to anchor them. When bone has thinned after tooth loss, bone grafting may be part of the plan. We'll review your options during your exam, explain the tradeoffs of each in plain terms, and leave the decision with you. A traditional complete or partial denture remains a sound, straightforward choice for many people.
Living With Your Dentures
Wearing dentures takes some adjustment. In the early weeks, eating and speaking may feel unfamiliar. Many patients start with softer foods cut into small pieces and practice reading aloud to get used to the feel. If you notice sore spots, tell us. Small adjustments can often make a meaningful difference in comfort.
Daily care matters too. Clean your dentures every day and handle them carefully to avoid drops and breakage. If you have a partial, keep brushing and flossing your natural teeth, since they support the appliance. Over time your gums and jaw naturally change shape, so a denture that once fit snugly may loosen. Regular visits let us check the fit, examine your gums, and perform oral cancer screenings, which remain important even when no natural teeth remain.
