A thin shell of material, often no thicker than a contact lens for porcelain, can change how a tooth looks when you smile. That is the idea behind veneers: a custom covering bonded to the front surface of a tooth to improve its color, shape, size, or alignment in appearance. At our West Palm Beach office, Dr. Michael Westcott and Dr. Sujay Trivedi offer veneers as part of our cosmetic dentistry care. We provide both porcelain veneers and composite veneers so the approach fits your teeth, goals, and budget.
Veneers cover only the visible front of a tooth, unlike a crown, which wraps the whole tooth. Because of this, they are typically used for concerns that are mostly about appearance. These include chips, small gaps, teeth that look worn or uneven, discoloration that doesn't respond well to whitening, or teeth that are slightly crooked but don't need full orthodontic movement. Many patients who come to us from West Palm Beach, Palm Beach, and Palm Beach Gardens want a brighter, more uniform smile without extensive restorative work.
Veneers can be placed on a single tooth that stands out from its neighbors, or on several front teeth as part of a broader smile makeover. Some people combine them with other treatments we offer, such as teeth whitening for the surrounding teeth, gum contouring to even out the gumline, or clear aligners to improve tooth position before veneers are placed. Because our team handles general, cosmetic, and restorative care under one roof, we can plan these steps together instead of sending you elsewhere.
Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells made to match the shape and shade we design for your smile. Porcelain reflects light much like natural enamel, and it resists surface staining from coffee, tea, and similar foods. It is usually the choice for patients who want a polished, natural-looking result across several teeth. Porcelain generally requires removing a small amount of enamel so the veneer sits flush, which means the treatment isn't considered reversible.
Composite veneers are made from tooth-colored resin, the same family of material we use for composite bonding. The material is shaped and sculpted directly on the tooth, and treatment often needs little or no enamel removal. Composite can be a good fit for smaller corrections, for patients who want a more conservative option, or for those weighing cost. It can be polished and repaired more easily if it chips, though it tends to pick up stains more readily than porcelain over time. During your consultation, we'll talk through these trade-offs honestly so you can choose what makes sense for you.
Are Veneers Right for You?
A good candidate starts with healthy teeth and gums. Veneers are bonded to tooth structure, so active decay or gum disease should be treated first. We provide fillings, gum disease treatment, and scaling and root planing, so we can address these issues before any cosmetic work begins. We also look at your bite. Patients who clench or grind may need a night mouth guard to help protect their new veneers.
Veneers aren't always the best answer. A tooth with large fillings or significant damage may be better served by a crown. Teeth with significant crowding may benefit from clear aligners first. Mild discoloration may respond well to whitening alone. Our cosmetic smile-design consultations, including digital smile design, help us show you the options and recommend the one that truly fits your situation.
Caring for Your Veneers
Veneers don't need special products, but they do need consistent care. The tooth underneath can still develop decay at the edges, and healthy gums frame the result. These habits help protect your investment:
- Brush twice daily with a non-abrasive toothpaste and floss every day
- Avoid using your teeth to open packages or bite fingernails and ice
- Wear a night guard if we recommend one for grinding
- Keep up with routine dental cleanings and exams so we can check margins and polish surfaces
At your regular visits, our hygienist and dentists will check your veneers along with the rest of your mouth. If a composite veneer needs touch-up polishing or a small repair, we can often handle it during a routine visit.
Insurance and Payment Options
Because veneers are usually considered cosmetic, insurance coverage varies and is often limited. We accept all major PPO insurance plans and are happy to help you understand what your plan may cover, especially when a veneer also addresses a chipped or damaged tooth. We also welcome self-pay patients and will review costs with you clearly before treatment begins, so there are no surprises.
