It has been a while since your last visit. Maybe your gums bleed a little when you floss, or your teeth feel rough even after brushing. Maybe nothing feels wrong at all, but you know it's time. These are the moments when a professional dental cleaning makes the most sense. At Family Dental Care in West Palm Beach, cleanings are one of the most common reasons patients come to see us, and they're one of the simplest ways to protect your smile for the long run.

A dental cleaning, sometimes called a prophylaxis, is a preventive visit where our dental hygienist removes the buildup that daily brushing and flossing leave behind. Soft plaque forms on teeth every day. When it isn't fully removed, it hardens into tartar (also called calculus), which clings to teeth and along the gumline. Once tartar forms, a toothbrush can't remove it. Professional instruments and polishing are needed to get teeth truly clean.

Cleanings help nearly everyone. We see patients ages eight and up, so we clean the teeth of busy parents, older children, college students home for the summer, and retirees. A cleaning is often paired with a dental exam, so our dentists can look for early signs of cavities, gum problems, and other concerns while your teeth are freshly cleaned and easy to evaluate. Many patients from Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens rely on these routine visits as the foundation of their oral health.

If you're coming in for your first cleaning with us, it helps to know that a routine cleaning is designed for mouths with generally healthy gums. Our team will review your health history and ask about any sensitivity, recent dental work, or concerns you've noticed. That conversation helps us tailor the visit to you, whether you're nervous about dental care or simply want a quick, thorough cleaning.

Sometimes we find that a standard cleaning isn't enough. If tartar has collected below the gumline or your gums show signs of infection, we may recommend scaling and root planing, a deeper cleaning that is part of our gum disease treatment. Patients who have had gum disease often move to periodontal maintenance, which involves more targeted cleanings on a schedule suited to their needs. We'll explain what we see and why, so you can make an informed decision. Patients with dental implants also benefit from regular professional care, and our team provides implant maintenance as well.

What Happens During and After Your Cleaning

During the cleaning itself, our hygienist works tooth by tooth, removing plaque and tartar, then polishing surfaces smooth so new plaque has a harder time sticking. Depending on your needs, we may also suggest a fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel, or dental sealants to protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth. Because our dentists also offer cavity detection and oral cancer screening, your cleaning visit can serve as a well-rounded checkup.

Once you leave, there's very little downtime. Most people return to their normal routine right away. Your gums may feel slightly tender for a day or so, especially if it has been a long time since your last visit. That usually fades quickly. Here is what helps your results last:

  • Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss or clean between teeth daily to keep plaque from hardening into tartar
  • Pay attention to bleeding gums, sensitivity, or bad breath, and let us know
  • Keep your recommended cleaning schedule so problems are caught early

The immediate result is a smooth, fresh-feeling mouth. The longer-term benefit is prevention. Regular cleanings help us spot small issues before they turn into bigger ones that may require fillings, crowns, or other restorative care.

Insurance and Payment Options

We want cost to be clear before your appointment, not a surprise afterward. Family Dental Care accepts all major PPO insurance plans, and preventive services like cleanings are a core part of what many dental plans are designed to support. Our team can help you understand how your benefits apply before your visit.

If you don't have dental insurance, you're still welcome here. We accept self-pay patients, and we're happy to walk you through what to expect for your visit so you can plan ahead.
