Onlays in West Palm Beach

Maybe you bit into something hard and felt a corner of a back tooth give way, or your dentist mentioned that an old filling has grown too large to hold up much longer. A filling may not be enough for a tooth like that, but the tooth may still have plenty of healthy structure worth keeping. For many of our patients in West Palm Beach, an onlay is the treatment that fits that in-between situation. It repairs the damaged part of the tooth and preserves as much of your natural tooth as possible.
An onlay is a custom-made restoration that rebuilds a tooth that has lost part of its chewing surface. It typically includes one or more of the raised points, called cusps, along the edges. An onlay is shaped outside the mouth to match your tooth exactly and then bonded into place. A filling, by contrast, is placed and shaped directly inside the tooth. Because an onlay covers the weakened area as a single solid piece, it can reinforce a tooth that a filling alone might not adequately support.
Onlays are part of the restorative dentistry we provide alongside crowns, inlays, and fillings. An inlay fits within the cusps of a tooth. A crown covers the entire visible tooth. An onlay sits between the two. It extends over the cusps that need help and leaves healthy portions of the tooth untouched. That makes it a conservative choice when damage is moderate rather than extensive.
An onlay may be worth discussing if you have a back tooth with a large or failing filling, a fractured cusp, or decay that has spread beyond what a standard filling can restore. Our team led by Michael C. Westcott, DDS, and Sujay Trivedi, DMD, sees patients ages eight and up. We evaluate each tooth individually during a dental exam, using our cavity detection tools to understand how much healthy structure remains.
Not every damaged tooth is a good match for an onlay. If a crack runs deep or the nerve is involved, a tooth may first need root canal therapy, followed by a crown for full coverage. If the damage is small, a filling or composite bonding may be all you need. We explain what we find and why we recommend a particular option so you can make an informed decision.
What to Expect During Onlay Treatment
The onlay process typically takes place over two visits at our West Palm Beach office. At the first appointment, we remove the decay or the old filling and prepare the tooth. Then we take an impression so your onlay can be made to fit precisely. You leave with a temporary restoration that protects the tooth while your permanent onlay is being made. At the second visit, we check the fit and bite, then bond the onlay securely in place.
- Exam and review of your tooth's condition and options
- Removal of decay or old filling material, with the tooth carefully shaped
- An impression for your custom onlay, plus a temporary restoration
- Placement, fit check, bite adjustment, and final bonding
If dental visits make you anxious, ask us about oral sedation dentistry. We offer it to help patients feel more relaxed during treatment. We also take time to walk you through each step so nothing comes as a surprise.
Caring for Your Onlay
After placement, care for your onlay much as you would your natural teeth. Brush twice daily, floss carefully around the restored tooth, and keep up with regular cleanings and exams. During those routine visits, our dental hygienist and dentists can check the margins of your onlay and catch potential problems early.
If you clench or grind your teeth, we may suggest a night mouth guard to reduce stress on your onlay and surrounding teeth. Use care with very hard foods, and don't use your teeth to open packages. If your onlay ever feels loose or your bite feels off, contact us. We offer emergency dental appointments for patients who need prompt attention.
