Wisdom Teeth Removal in West Palm Beach

Wisdom Teeth Removal in West Palm Beach

It often starts with a dull ache at the back of the jaw, or gum tissue behind the last molar that feels tender and swollen when you chew. Sometimes there is no discomfort at all, and the first sign shows up on an X-ray during a routine checkup. For many of our West Palm Beach patients, this is how a conversation about wisdom teeth begins. At Family Dental Care, we help patients understand what is happening, weigh their options, and, when removal makes sense, complete the procedure right here in our West Palm Beach office.

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars, and they usually develop in the late teens or early twenties. By then, the rest of the adult teeth have typically settled into place, so there is not always enough room for these last molars to come in comfortably. Some emerge only partway, some grow in at an angle, and some stay trapped beneath the gum or bone. A tooth that cannot fully come in is called impacted.

Wisdom teeth removal is the process of extracting one or more of these molars. Depending on how a tooth is positioned, we may perform a simple extraction for a tooth that has fully erupted, or a surgical extraction for a tooth that is impacted or only partially visible. Because our practice brings general dentistry and oral surgery together under one roof, West Palm Beach families can often have the evaluation and the procedure handled by the same team they already know.

Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. Some grow in straight, function well, and can be kept clean with regular brushing and flossing. Others create problems, or are positioned in a way that makes future problems more likely. During your exam, we look at how the teeth are developing, how much space is available, and how well you can reach the area to keep it clean.

Patients commonly come to us with situations like these:

  • Pain, pressure, or swelling near the back of the mouth
  • A wisdom tooth that has broken through the gum only partway
  • Food getting trapped around a back molar that is hard to clean
  • Crowding concerns, especially for patients who have had orthodontic care
  • Decay or gum irritation affecting the wisdom tooth or the molar next to it

We see patients ages eight and up, so we are often able to watch wisdom teeth develop over several years of routine visits. That ongoing view of your smile helps us recommend removal only when it is truly in your best interest. If you are an adult who has never had your wisdom teeth evaluated, we are glad to take a look at any stage.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Your care begins with a dental exam and imaging so we can see each tooth's position, its roots, and its relationship to the surrounding bone. We walk you through what we find, explain whether a simple or surgical approach is likely, and answer your questions before anything is scheduled. We want you to feel informed and comfortable with the plan.

On the day of your procedure, we numb the area thoroughly. For patients who feel nervous about dental work, we offer oral sedation to help you feel more relaxed. If a tooth is impacted, we gently access it through the gum and remove it, sometimes in sections to make the process easier on the surrounding tissue. In certain cases, bone grafting may be discussed to support the area afterward, and we will explain whether that applies to you. Our office also offers emergency dental appointments, so if a wisdom tooth suddenly flares up, West Palm Beach patients can reach out to us rather than waiting in discomfort.

Recovery, Insurance, and Payment

Healing after wisdom teeth removal is a gradual process, and we give you clear written instructions before you leave. These typically cover how to manage the extraction sites, which foods are easiest to eat in the first days, and how to keep your mouth clean while it heals. Following those instructions closely is one of the most helpful things you can do for a smooth recovery. If anything feels unusual, or you have questions once you are home, call our office and our team will guide you.

We also make the financial side as straightforward as possible. Family Dental Care accepts all major PPO insurance plans, and our team can help you understand how your coverage applies to your treatment. We welcome self-pay patients as well, and we are happy to review costs with you before your procedure so there are no surprises.

Led by Dr. Michael Westcott and Dr. Sujay Trivedi, our team provides integrative, multidisciplinary care in a state-of-the-art facility serving West Palm Beach and nearby communities. If your wisdom teeth are causing discomfort, or you would simply like to know where they stand, we invite you to schedule an evaluation with us.
