Maybe you lost a back tooth years ago and have grown used to chewing on the other side. Perhaps a front tooth cracked beyond repair, or a partial denture has never felt quite secure. These are some of the most common situations we see in our West Palm Beach office, and for many patients, dental implants offer a stable, long-term way to replace what is missing. Our team, led by Michael C. Westcott, DDS, and Sujay Trivedi, DMD, takes the time to explain each option clearly so you can make a confident decision about your smile.
A dental implant is a small post placed in the jawbone where a tooth root used to be. Once it is in place, it serves as a foundation for a replacement tooth. Because the implant is anchored in bone rather than resting on the gums or relying on neighboring teeth, it is designed to feel and function much like a natural tooth when you eat, speak, and smile.
Implants are versatile. A single implant can support one crown to replace one tooth. Two or more implants can hold an implant-supported bridge to fill a longer gap. For patients missing most or all of their teeth, implants can anchor implant-supported dentures, including snap-in dentures, or a full-arch restoration such as All-on-X. Our office provides each of these options, so we can match the approach to your needs rather than fitting you into a single solution.
Good candidates are generally adults and older teens with healthy gums and enough jawbone to support an implant. Your overall health, your gum health, and the condition of your remaining teeth all play a role. During your consultation, we review your dental history, examine your mouth, and discuss what you hope to achieve so we can tell you honestly whether implants are a good fit.
Every patient's situation is different, and there are a few things worth knowing ahead of time:
- Bone volume matters. When a tooth has been missing for a while, the surrounding bone can shrink. We offer bone grafting to help rebuild the area when needed.
- Gum health comes first. Because we provide gum disease treatment, including scaling and root planing, we can address gum concerns before implant placement.
- A failing tooth may need removal. We perform both simple and surgical extractions, so you can often handle every step in one familiar office.
- Comfort options are available. For patients who feel anxious, we offer oral sedation to help you feel more relaxed.
Because we bring together general, periodontal, prosthodontic, and surgical capabilities under one roof, we can coordinate more complex treatment plans in-house. You also do not need a referral to see us about implants.
Caring for Your Implants and What to Expect Long Term
Once your implant and restoration are complete, caring for them is much like caring for natural teeth. Brushing twice a day, cleaning between teeth daily, and keeping up with regular dental visits all help protect the gums and bone surrounding the implant. Although an implant cannot develop a cavity, the tissue around it can still become inflamed if plaque builds up, so daily habits really do matter.
We provide dedicated implant maintenance as part of our periodontal care, and our dental hygienist can show you techniques and tools that make cleaning around implants easier. If you have implant-supported dentures, we will walk you through how to care for both the prosthesis and the implants beneath it. If you grind your teeth at night, we may also recommend a night mouth guard to help protect your restoration.
Results depend on your individual health and how well the implant area is maintained over time. Our goal is to give you a restoration that looks natural and lets you eat and speak comfortably, and we will continue to monitor it at your routine checkups so small concerns can be addressed early.
Insurance and Payment Options
We understand that cost is an important part of any treatment decision. Our office accepts all major PPO insurance plans, and we also welcome self-pay patients. Coverage for implants varies widely from plan to plan, so our team will help you understand what your insurance may contribute before treatment begins.
After your consultation, we provide a clear treatment plan that outlines each recommended step, from any preliminary care such as extractions or grafting through the final restoration. That way, you know what to expect and can plan with confidence. If you have questions about your benefits or payment, our front office team is always glad to talk them through with you.
