Wisdom teeth tend to make themselves known at inconvenient moments: a dull ache that shows up during exams, pressure in the back of the jaw that makes chewing uncomfortable, or a sore spot that keeps catching food. For many teens and adults, these third molars simply don't have enough room to come in comfortably. At Family Dental Care in West Palm Beach, we help patients understand what their wisdom teeth are doing and whether removing them makes sense. When it does, we take care of the treatment right here in our office.

Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to develop, sitting at the very back of the upper and lower jaws. Because they arrive after the rest of the adult teeth are already in place, they often run short on space. Some come in partway, some grow in at an angle, and some stay trapped beneath the gums or bone. These are often called impacted wisdom teeth. Others erupt fully but are so far back that keeping them clean becomes a daily struggle.

Wisdom teeth removal helps a wide range of people. Some patients come to us because of discomfort they can feel. Others learn about a developing problem during a routine dental exam, before any symptoms appear. Common reasons we evaluate wisdom teeth include:

  • Pain, pressure, or tenderness in the back of the mouth
  • Teeth that are only partially visible through the gums
  • Food trapping and difficulty brushing or flossing the back molars
  • Teeth growing at an angle toward neighboring molars
  • Concerns raised while planning other treatment, such as orthodontics

Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out, and we never treat removal as automatic. Our team, led by Dr. Michael Westcott and Dr. Sujay Trivedi, starts with a careful exam. We look at how each tooth is positioned, how it relates to the surrounding teeth and jaw, and how it fits with your overall oral health. We then walk you through what we see in plain terms so you can make an informed decision.

Every case is different. A wisdom tooth that has fully erupted may be removed with a simple extraction. A tooth that is impacted or sits beneath the gum line typically requires a surgical extraction. Because our practice includes oral surgery among its capabilities, we can usually handle both types in our own office. That spares many patients the hassle of being sent elsewhere. If the area needs additional support afterward, bone grafting is also available here.

Feeling nervous is completely normal, especially for patients who have never had a tooth removed. For those who would like help relaxing, we offer oral sedation. We are happy to talk through whether it's a good fit for you during your consultation.

Healing and Aftercare at Home

The first few days after removal are when good aftercare matters most. Before you leave, we explain how to care for the treatment sites and what to expect as you recover. That way, nothing catches you off guard once you're home. We encourage patients to plan for some rest and soft foods while the area begins to heal.

Recovery varies from person to person and depends on factors like how many teeth were removed and whether they were impacted. If something doesn't feel right during healing, please call us. We offer emergency dental appointments, so patients who have concerns after their procedure can reach a team that already knows their case. Once healing is complete, we can return to your regular schedule of cleanings and exams with our dental hygienist to keep the back of your mouth healthy.

Insurance and Payment Options

Understanding the cost of care ahead of time helps you plan with confidence. We accept all major PPO insurance plans, and our team can help you understand how your coverage may apply to wisdom teeth removal. We also welcome self-pay patients who do not have dental insurance.

Since every case is unique, we review the details of your treatment with you before we begin. If you have questions about your benefits or what to expect financially, just ask. We're glad to go over it with you at any point.
